Volunteer Programs

Shelter Volunteer Program

Our Shelter Program focuses on the wellbeing of our furry residents. Anyone interested in becoming part of our Shelter Team will need to submit their application, schedule an interview and commit at least six months to our program.  Volunteers in this program must be at least 8 years of age to participate and with a parent/ legal guardian until they turn 16 years of age, all volunteers under the age of 18 must have a minor consent form on file in order to volunteer.

Our Shelter Program consists of four volunteer tiers, White shirt, Animal Handler, Adoption Counselor, and Site Lead. If you are interested in moving up you will need to complete certain requirements for each tier.

School Community Service Program

The Humane Society of El Paso encourages students from the elementary to university level that require community service hours to begin their volunteer journey in our School Community Service Program. Volunteers in this program must be at least 8 years of age to participate with a parent/ legal guardian until they turn 16 years of age, all volunteers under the age of 18 must have a minor consent form on file in order to volunteer. This program is also designed for members of the community that are not able to commit to atleast six months to our Shelter Program. 

Volunteers in this program will complete an online orientation and must schedule and pay for a facility tour and volunteer shirt pick up. Tours are scheduled on a weekly basis to ensure students have a faster onboarding process. Volunteers in this program will be introduced to shelter life by learning about daily duties, basic enrichment activities, and attending offsite adoption events. 

*Once hours are completed volunteers will have the option to join our Shelter Program but will need to schedule an interview and commit at least six months to the program. Hours completed from community service will be rolled over to the Shelter Program if accepted.

Retail Cat Care Program

Our Retail Cat Care Program is housed at five retail partner locations across the city; PetSmart Desert North, PetSmart Remcon, PetSmart Fountains, PetSmart Montana, and Petco Zaragoza. We encourage volunteers that live or work around these locations to participate in this program. Volunteers must commit to one shift a week to work at their designated location.

Nursery Program

The Nursery at HSEP first opened its door spring of 2019, it was opened to help save as many neonatal kitten lives during kitten season.  Kitten Season starts at the beginning of spring, peaks during the summer time and starts to slow down in the fall, our nursery is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week during the peak of the season and closes in the fall. The Nursery is a temporary solution while we are able to place them in a foster home.

Anyone interested in becoming part of our Nursery Team will need to submit their application, schedule an interview and commit at least 1 three hour shift a week while the Kitten Nursey is open.

Court Ordered- Mandated Program

The Humane Society of El Paso offers the opportunity for those with court-mandated community service to complete their hours at the shelter.

Volunteers must schedule themselves between Tuesday through Saturday from the hours of 8-11 am or 11-2 pm; must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. 

C.O. volunteers will be limited to maintenance duties such as lawn mowing, washing windows, kennel scrubbing, and other duties assigned by the Maintenance Manager. If you wish to continue your volunteer career at HSEP after completing court-mandated hours, you will be able to begin training to become an Animal Handler and Adoption Counselor.
