VETERINARY ASSISTANT – (PART-TIME)
Description
Under the general supervision and direction of the Medical Supervisor, the Veterinary Assistant will work with contract Veterinarian and Medical Supervisor to diagnose, treat, observe and document all medical conditions in the shelter animals in order to meet department goals. The Veterinary Assistant is primarily responsible for daily oversight of all sick animals to include cleaning, feeding and medicating, as well as other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of animal behavior.
Knowledge of shelter medicine and clinical veterinary medicine.
Able to communicate and document effectively.
Able to create and maintain a safe work environment.
Able to properly use, clean, and maintain medical tools and technologies.
Detail oriented and able to multitask.
Qualifications
A High School Diploma, or completion of a GED Program required. Experience in animal behavior, health and handling required. Completion of a Veterinary Assistant (VA) or Veterinary Technician (VT) program, or 2 years equivalent experience working in a veterinary clinic, animal welfare organization or animal control agency. Prefer at least 1 year of VA or VT experience working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an animal shelter setting with the potential for exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic disease, animal bites and scratches. Work is performed indoors with exposure to cleaning agents. Regular lifting of 25-75 lbs. with reasonable accommodation is required.
